Chiaroscuro Head by shauncharles
Chiaroscuro Head
Here is another head drawing, but this time done in charcoal for my Chiaroscuro masters class. Its always awesome to see how this medium can show such subtlety. Enjoy! :)

Hanging cloth by shauncharles
Hanging cloth
In an old chiaroscuro class I took for my masters degree we were asked to render a hanging cloth with charcoal. With proper attention and time, this can be really fun. Of course a lot of what makes the image great is how you hang the cloth. You first have to give the material a voice as it hangs there in front of you. Then you capture it and give it another voice. :) Enjoy!

This is another portrait in pastel. A great model to work from. :) Enjoy!

self portrait by shauncharles
self portrait
As usual, assignments in figure or portrait classes always seem to have self portraits involved. It must be some kind of test... or punishment. ;) Either way, this was (believe it or not) the best photo I was able to get at the time. I look very spaced out and tired... which is actually true, but still makes me look terrible. This is done with pastels once again. Its incredible how color can be pushed in and be so pure where you lay it down because the pigment concentration is so high. Enjoy! :)

14 2 Williams B by shauncharles

This was a new technique utilizing oil paint. The idea is to use the oil very thin with mineral spirits, turpentine, or whatever you thin your brushes with, and allow the strokes to be seen. In a way it is an imitation of the pastel technique. The hatching strokes follow the form or help define the direction of the form. I had some success in this, but since it was new, I had some errors along the way. It is applied to chipboard which absorbs quite a bit of the oil and thinner... which gives part of that dry brush effect. Anyway, this was a wonderful photo to work from. Unfortunately the color was somewhat limited since I took my masters classes online and I only had a photo to work from. I really enjoyed this as oil is my favorite medium along with Photoshop. I need to try this again. :) Enjoy!

I am an illustrator and Fine artist, and I struggle between traditional and digital mediums. I am married with five children living in a small college town. I earned my Bachelors Degree from BYU-IDAHO in 2007 and I began my Masters at the Academy of Art Univeristy in 2009. School is on hold for the time being. I hope to get back and finish my Masters. I favor sketching in blue BIC pen as well as working in Photoshop. I Love painting in Oil preferable. Often with 5 kids, I work digitally instead. I love Landscape paintings and following the fantasy and science fiction genre's quit heavily. Also, digitally I often do web design. Visit my website for a more complete view of my older work: www.brushdragon.com/old-site
www.brushdragon.com is still in the works with 8 images and I hope to finish it this year sometime.

Interests
Something dangerous is looking through old sketchbooks.  Once you see an old concept you loved, you simply have to take a go at it...because you know you can do so much better.  Well, that and finding some old stuff that was actually good is fun too.  The New Emerald post is one of those kinds of things.  There are so many pieces of art I have...some good, some bad.  So, which to upload?  Incisions, Incisions.
